"Nuggets of Wisdom, Inspiration, and Fun for Your Mid-Week Slump."

Hey Reader,

Have you ever noticed how October always feels like a month of transition? Between the vibrancy of summer and the calm embrace of autumn, I find that it’s a time to reflect on how far we’ve come, what we’ve shed, and what we’re about to embrace.

I am Jamaican (all year summer), yet I still love autumn. I love to see leaves transition from their lush green colors to beautiful hues of orange, brown, red and yellow. I recall the first time experiencing this in Connecticut, oh man, it was a beauty to behold and I’ve been in love ever since. But that’s not all I love about autumn. It’s the season associated with abundance, balance, change, and maturity. And, when you think of food, you think of pumpkin and all the aromatic spices that permeate the air during this season. I love me a good pumpkin bread…hmmm, maybe it’s time to make one, yummy.

The Good Old Post

Today is 'World Post Day'. It's a day to celebrate the importance of postal services in connecting people and businesses around the world. When did you last write a letter and mail it to someone? My brain can’t even go so far back. But I remember when I was younger and had pen pals in Australia and Canada (I wonder where they are now?). That was so much fun, sitting, waiting for months, anticipating what they’d have to update me on. Now, with the transition to instant gratification – aka text messages and WhatsApp, etc., we’ve lost sight of the importance that Post Offices played and continue to play in communication and linkages.

Let's Talk About Those Curves

I love Meghan Trainor’s song, 'All About That Bass'. It’s a song about the empowerment of being ‘thick,’ or being a ‘thickaz’ as we say in Jamaica. I am a Thickaz through-and-through so on this National Curves Day I wanna BIG UP my fellow THICKAZ and remind them (women and men) to love and embrace the bodies you were blessed with (even if you're not a Thickaz). And, as per the National Day Calendar, to celebrate today, wear something red and share a selfie on social using NationalCurvesDay, #DapperBomber, or #CurvyBombshell to show support.

Question For You?

If you were to write a letter and mail it, who would you write and why? Share your responses with me via email @ iamdeoncecile@gmail.com, I’d love to hear your thoughts. You can also click here to respond to this email).

Me: I’d write my mom, tell her about all the things I’ve accomplished since she left, tell her how much I miss her and Dad (cause more than likely she’d be the one reading it to him anyway), tell her that my brothers and I are doing well and we haven’t killed each other and that her grandbabies have grown into wonderful young men, and that life has been life-ing.

Anyhoos...

As you continue through the week, remember to embrace the beauty of change, celebrate the body you have that makes you unique, and, if you’re brave enough, write me a letter and mail it. My mailing address is at the end of this newsletter. Now, are you gonna be brave today…let’s see. I’ll wait — let's connect and keep the conversation going."

Until next Wednesday, Happy Penned Wednesday, Reader! May you be blessed, may you be safe, and please be kind - to yourself and others.

Update: In last week's newsletter I asked if people named their vehicles and I got some interesting responses like Mitsy, Silver Bullet, Sweetie, Betsy, Ruby, Scarlett, and Phantom.

Penned Wednesday Newsletter Vol. 18 | October 2, 2024 "Nuggets of Wisdom, Inspiration, and Fun for Your Mid-Week Slump." Hey Reader, Have you been catastrophizing lately? Or have you ever been guilty of catastrophizing at some point (or points) in your life? Well, I have. I recently completed reading Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams and one of the phrases that stood out to me was when Queenie’s grandmother told her, “Nuh badda catastrophize.” In other words, don’t assume the worse is going...
